Day 6 (20.03.2006)
Today we drove to the Terracotta Army which is not far from Xian. When we arrived there we first saw two bronze stagecoachs which are in an exhibition hall. After that we went to the main hall and we saw the terracotta soldiers. This view was fascinating. In 1974 Chinese farmers tried to build a well and they discovered the Terracotta Army. Every Terracotta Soldier has got an own facial expression. There are over 7000 terracotta soldiers and they guard the tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi (reign: 221 BC - 210 BC) - the first emperor of China. In the main hall the place where the Chinese farmers discovered the Terracotta Army is marked. In the main hall there are figures of men and horses. When one thinks about how old the Terracotta Army is it is even more fascinating. After that we went into two smaller halls with further warriors. Very nice figures are exposed in glass cabinets. After sightseeing we ate lunch on the area of the Terracotta Army. It was very interesting to see how the cook could make thin noddles of thick pasty.
The Terrakotta Army
After lunch we drove to a jade factory and then back to Xian. We visited the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was built in 652 (Tang Dynasty) and it is 73 m high. It belongs to the Temple of Great Maternal Grace. The pagoda and the other buildings and pavilions in this temple are very nice. Afterwards we drove to the Stele Forest. It is a collection of different important Chinese texts which are engraved in stone. The oldest steles are from the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) and they contain the confucian classics. After that we visited the Muslim Quarter. In the evening we drove to a theatre presentation which was typical for the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907). After that the day ended.
