Day 59 (06.04.2007)
Today many trees bloomed in Beijing. I went to the Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan). The construction of the Old Summer Palace started in 1709. Sadly in 1860 it was destroyed by Anglo-French troops and not rebuild. Some of the destroyed buildings had European architectural elements. Today there are only ruins. While I walked through the garden two Chinese started talking to me. They were a few meters away and so I did not know that they were talking to me. When they said to each other, in Chinese, that I do not understand then I turned towards them and told them that I understand them. Together we walked around a lake and because they spoke only Chinese I had a chance to practise my Chinese. Later we said goodbye to each other and I visited the ruins of the buildings with European architectural elements. It is always sad when art is being destroyed. Afterwards I went back to the campus.
