Day 85 (02.05.2007)
Today I went together with a Chinese friend to the Great Wall in Jinshanling and Simatai. It is located about 120 km north of Beijing. There is also the border between the administrative area of Beijing and the Hebei Province. To make it there and back again on the same day we traveled with a group. But on the Great Wall everyone could go as fast as she or he wanted. At the beginning we were only two - my Chinese friend and me. Some Chinese offer their help. First I was of the opinion that I can make it by myself and I did not see a reason to pay somebody for helping me to go up. I also went up the Xiangshan by myself. But I was wrong, because the climb and the relegation are often very steep. Sometimes the Great Wall is even broken. So one can fall down quite deep. Without luggage it would not be a problem for me, but with a backpack and a big camera I needed somebody to help me. Finally two persons accompanied us and helped me. Here there is no handrail like in Badaling. It is fascinating to see a part of the Great Wall which is not or only a little bit restored and with all the mountains it looks beautiful! We had very good weather and the view is unique. From all the parts of the Great Wall that I visited near Beijing I like this one most. From Jinshanling to Simatai one goes about 10 km on the Great Wall and it takes about 5 hours. In the end we walked over a suspension bridge. Finally we found our group and our bus and in the evening we were back on the campus.
