My Xinjiang Tour (May 2007)
After my Chinese study in Beijing I flew to the autonomous region Xinjiang Uyghur. Xinjiang is located in West China and so geographically it is already in Central Asia. With an area of about 1.66 million km2 Xinjiang is more than 4.5 times as large as Germany. A large part of this area is covered by the Taklamakan Desert. On the border between Xinjiang and Pakistan there is the second highest mountain in the world the K2 (8611 m). The majority of the population are Uyghurs (a Turkic people), who are mainly Muslims. The Han Chinese are the second largest population group. Further ethnic groups are for example the Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks and Tajiks. For me it was interesting to travel to this region, because it was an important part of the Silk Road and one can see the mix of Chinese culture and Islam. I like it to travel individual and alone, because one can plan everything by oneself, there is no time pressure and so it is possible to visit everything more detailed and one can become acquainted with places, people and their cultures in a better way.
