Day 1 (11.11.2007)

Today in the morning, in Beijing, I got on a plane to Lhasa. The plane made a stopover in Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan. After about 1 hour the plane took off to Lhasa. Lhasa is the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region and the distance between Beijing and Lhasa is about 2500 km. A few minutes after the take off in Chengdu, from the plane, one had got a beautiful view of the highlands of Sichuan and Tibet. The inscriptions in Tibet are in Chinese and Tibetan. The Tibetan script is based on an Indian script. Two Tibetan monks were so kind and with their jeep they took me from the airport to Lhasa. Lhasa is situated on an elevation of 3600 m and so some people can get symptoms of altitude sickness here. I had only the lightest symptom and it was shortness of breath, like in May 2007 when I was in Xinjiang at the Karakul Lake, also on an altitude of 3600 m. On the way to the hotel the jeep passed by the Potala Palace and I was fascinated by the view. My hotel was located near the Jokhang. The Jokhang is a Buddhist temple and for the Tibetans it is very important. Today it was already late and so I only went one time around the Jokhang and then I went to bed. At the Jokhang there are always many Buddhists who pray and clockwisely go around the Jokhang.
