Day 6 (16.11.2007)

The aim today was the town Gyantse. As a foreigner I needed special permissions for Gyantse and for my further tour and I also had to take a tour guide with me. In the morning the driver, the tour guide and me left Lhasa in a jeep towards west. We drove on the Friendship Highway, which is constructed very well. Sometime we left the Friendship Highway and we drove through the land. The views were great. I was surprised that in many of these remote areas there is mobile phone reception. We drove higher and higher and finally we arrived at the Yong-la Pass, which is situated on an altitude of about 5000 m. Then we drove down and finally we arrived in Gyantse. Gyantse is located on an elevation of about 4000 m. First I went to the Dzong of Gyantse. Dzongs are fortresses. The Dzong is situated on a mountain and looks interesting. I followed the street and finally I came to the Pelkor Chode Monastery. Pelkor Chode was founded in 1418. The Kumbum of Pelkor Chode is very beautiful and interesting. Afterwards I walked a little bit through Gyantse. Despite a power blackout in the whole town, in the evening we had power in the hotel, because the hotel was so well equipped that it has even got an own power generator.
