Day 8 (28.11.2007)

In the morning I went to the city Dali, which is 265 km away from Kunming, by bus. Dali is located at the Erhai Lake on an elevation of about 2000 m. The area around Dali is mountainous and so the scenery is very nice. The ethnic minorities Bai and Yi constitute a large part of the population of Dali. In history Dali was the capital of the kingdoms of Nanzhao (738 - 902) and Dali (937 - 1253). Both kingdoms extended over parts of South China and Southeast Asia. After I have found a hotel room, I went to the Three Pagodas. The Three Pagodas are the landmark of Dali and they are located on the area of the Chongsheng Temple. The highest pagoda (built in the 9th century) is 69 m high and each of the other two pagodas (built in the 10th century) is 42 m high. Together the pagodas look very nice. The Chongsheng Temple is situated at a mountainside and from the top I had a great view of the temple, the pagodas and the scenery with the Erhai Lake. After a long sightseeing of the Temple with the Three Pagodas I visited the Old Town of Dali. Old town gates are to be found here. The Old Town is very nice and it looks typical South Chinese. In the evening I went to the hotel and I stayed overnight in Dali.
