Hong Kong

Hong Kong has got 6.9 million citizens and it is very dense populated. Hong Kong consists of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and many other smaller islands. The New Territories and Kowloon are a peninsula. After China had lost the First Opium War in 1842 it had to give Great Britain the island Hong Kong forever. In 1860 Great Britain also took territories (New Territories) which surround Hong Kong. The New Territories should be given back to China after 99 years. This period of 99 years began in 1898 and should end in 1997. This period did not apply to Hong Kong and Hong Kong should stay British forever. Through Hong Kong opium was imported to China from the British colony India. Through this trade Hong Kong grew. In the Second World War it was occupied by Japan, but after the Japanese defeat in the Second World War Great Britain had rebuilt Hong Kong. Because of communism in China many Chinese escaped to Hong Kong. The result is that in Hong Kong there are many millionaires, but also many very poor people. Through all these refugees Hong Kong is very dense settled. Great Britain had only to give back the territories which are around Hong Kong, but without them Hong Kong cannot survive. And so on the 1st of July 1997 Great Britain also gave back Hong Kong to China. All fears to the defiance China declared that Hong Kong will have a capitalistical system. Until today Hong Kong has got his old capitalistical system and it is not disturbed by China. Through its harbour Hong Kong is a very important place for international trade. Hong Kong has got many modern skyscrapers. There are also traditional temples in Hong Kong and the people try to adapt the buildings to Feng Shui what is very superstitious. The Bank of China on Hong Kong Island looks very futuristical. An also architectural interesting building is the building of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. From the Victoria Peak, the highest mountain on Hong Kong Island, one have got a nice view of Hong Kong Island. From the southern bank of Kowloon there is also a nice view of Hong Kong Island. In the south of Hong Kong Island, in Repulse Bay, there is also a beach. From Kowloon there goes the Star Ferry to Hong Kong Island and on the way one can enjoy the skyline. The main street in Kowloon (north-south direction) is the Nathan Road.
