Smoke quartz
The Smoke quartz belongs to the family of the quartzes. The chemical formula is SiO2. The hardness is 7 and the
crystal system is trigonal. Its crystals looks like the crystals of rock crystal. The Smoke quartz is like other quartzes transparent and the color is brown or black. Black Smoke quartz is called morion. Smoke quartz orginates from colorless quartz, that means Rock crystal or from Amethyst, violet quartz, because of radioactivity. The reason is a shift of the silicon atomes. Because of this shift the color changes into brown. So here no other materials are responsible for the color. When we put Smoke quartz into fire, like Amethyst, it becomes yellow now we have got Citrine. We can find the Smoke quartz in geodes in Switzerland, Brazil and Sri Lanka. When we made jewels of Smoke quartz we often use the in the facett slide.
